How to Keep Your Baby’s Skin Safe During Summer
- Keep your baby in the shade
Shade is the best way to shield your baby in the sun especially he/she is younger than 6 months old. If you cannot find shade, creat your own using an umbrella - If you are going outside, dress your baby in sun protective clothing such as light weight, long sleeve shirt and pants
- In addition make sure your baby always wear light, wide sunglasses with UV protection
- Minimize sunscreen use on children younger than 6 months old
However if shades and adequate clothing are not available parents can apply minimal amount of water resistant broad spectrum sunscreen with minimum SPF 30
Sun screen with Zinc oxide or Titanium dioxide is less likely to irritate the skin of your baby - Reapply sunscreen every 2 hourly and immediately after swimming / excessive sweating
- Stay safe on hot days: by making sure your baby doesn’t get over heated, drinks plenty of fluids
- If your baby is fussy, crying excessively and perhaps develop redness on exposed skin, take him/her indoor immediately
